Natural Black & Brown Aquarium Gravel is a decorative aquarium substrate made of natural black and brown gravel with a 2-5mm grain, supplied in an 8kg bag. It forms a natural-looking tank floor for freshwater aquariums, adds colour to the layout and gives beneficial bacteria plenty of surface to colonise.

Planning your layout

Dark gravel like this black and brown mix tends to make fish colours look richer and cuts glare from the aquarium light. With a 2 to 5mm grain it is fine enough for most plant roots and for fish that sift the bottom gently. For quantity, multiply the floor length and width in centimetres by the depth you want, divide by 1,000 for litres, and allow roughly 1.5kg per litre: one 8kg bag gives about 5 litres, enough for a 4cm layer on a 50 x 25cm floor. Use a gravel vacuum during water changes to keep debris from settling between the grains.

Good to know

Rinse the gravel thoroughly until the water runs clear, and spread it in an even layer about 5cm deep, sloping slightly higher towards the back.
