Caring for small pets in the UAE heat
Heat is the biggest risk for small animals here. Rabbits, guinea pigs and especially chinchillas struggle above about 25 to 28°C, so from May to October they belong indoors with the AC running, not on a balcony, roof terrace or in an outdoor hutch. Keep the cage out of direct sun and away from the AC outlet, since cold drafts are not good for them either. Fast breathing, lethargy and wet fur around the mouth are warning signs of overheating, so move the pet somewhere cool and call an exotics vet. Diet comes next. Rabbits and guinea pigs need unlimited hay, which should make up most of what they eat and keeps their constantly growing teeth worn down. Guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C, so they need it daily from fresh vegetables such as bell pepper or a fortified pellet. Syrian hamsters live alone and need deep bedding to burrow, and chinchillas need a dust bath, not a water bath, to keep their coats clean. Check water bottles every day, because a blocked spout in summer turns into an emergency within hours.
