Getting heat, light and humidity right indoors
Reptiles cannot make their own body heat, so every reptile terrarium needs a gradient: a warm basking end and a cooler end the animal can move between. A desert species such as a bearded dragon typically needs a basking surface of roughly 38 to 42°C, while many geckos and snakes prefer lower temperatures, so check your species before buying equipment.

Air-conditioned rooms are often kept in the low 20s°C day and night, which is too cool for most reptiles without extra heat, so the enclosure usually needs heating even in summer. Run every heat source through a thermostat and check both ends with a digital thermometer.

Day-active lizards and tortoises need UVB lighting to make vitamin D3 and use calcium properly. UVB output fades long before a lamp stops glowing, so replace tubes and bulbs on the maker’s schedule, often every 6 to 12 months. AC also dries the air, so tropical species such as crested geckos may need regular misting and a humid hide. Tortoises kept outdoors need deep shade, water and a burrow or shelter through the summer, when ground temperatures become dangerous.
