Why and how to dust bathe

Chinchillas should never be bathed in water: their fur is so dense that it stays damp for a long time, which can lead to skin and fur problems, so a sand bath is how they keep clean. Use a bath house or a container with high sides to keep the sand in, and remove it after the session so your chinchilla does not use it as a toilet or bathe so often that the skin dries out. Sift out droppings and hair after each bath and reuse the sand for a few sessions, replacing it once it looks clumped or dirty. A 1.3 kg bag lasts several weeks for one or two chinchillas.
