The ADA Drop Checker is a glass instrument for checking the CO2 level in your planted aquarium with a simple procedure. Fill it with pH reagent and aquarium water, place it inside the tank, and the colour of the reagent shows whether CO2 levels are right for your plants.

Reading the colour

The reagent changes colour with the CO2 level in the water: green indicates a suitable level, blue means CO2 is too low, and yellow means there is too much, which can stress fish. Fix the checker inside the glass on the side opposite the CO2 diffuser, low enough to reflect conditions where the plants grow, with its opening facing down so the reagent sits in the small trapped air pocket. Readings lag behind changes by an hour or two, so adjust the bubble rate gradually and check again later in the lighting period before making another change.
