Choosing safe bedding and accessories
Good bedding absorbs urine, controls odor and gives burrowing species somewhere to dig. Choose a dust-extracted small animal bedding and avoid strongly scented cedar shavings, which can irritate the airways. Hamsters want bedding deep enough to tunnel in, ideally 15 cm or more. Spot-clean wet corners every day and change everything weekly; in humid summer months ammonia builds up faster, so do not stretch the schedule. Chinchillas clean their fur with a dust bath rather than water, so offer a shallow dish of chinchilla bathing sand for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a week, then take it out so it stays clean. Use a hamster ball only for short, supervised sessions on a flat floor away from stairs, and never in a warm room, since the air inside heats up quickly. Hanging pouches give sugar gliders a dark place to sleep during the day. Brush long-haired guinea pigs and rabbits several times a week, more often while they shed.
