Tips for nests, nesting material and sand
Add a nest only when you plan to breed, as a nest can trigger hormonal behavior and repeated egg laying. Canaries build in an open cup nest, many finches prefer a covered wicker nest, and doves need a wide, shallow platform such as the turtledove nest. Offer short, soft fibers rather than long thread or string, which can wrap around toes. Spread a thin layer of sand on the cage floor and replace it weekly. Canaries and finches may pick at a little grit, but budgies and parrots hull their seed and do not need much, so ask an avian vet if you are unsure. Keep breeding cages away from AC drafts and direct summer sun.
