Sizing a cage for rabbits, hamsters and chinchillas
Floor space matters more than height for rabbits and guinea pigs. A rabbit should be able to take three hops in a row, lie stretched out and stand on its back legs without touching the roof, and even a large cage works best as a base, with several hours of supervised exercise each day. A hamster cage needs room for deep bedding to burrow in, and bars close enough that dwarf breeds cannot squeeze through, usually 1 cm or less. Syrian hamsters need a wheel of at least 28 cm with a solid running surface so their backs stay straight. Chinchillas are climbers and jumpers, so a chinchilla cage should be tall with several shelves, and wood or metal fittings stand up to their chewing better than plastic. Place any cage in an air-conditioned room away from windows and the AC outlet, as chinchillas in particular suffer above 25°C. For vet trips, line a small animal carrier with a towel and a handful of hay to keep the journey calm.
