How to prepare and test aquarium water at home
Treat every bucket of tap water before it reaches the tank. Local tap water is mostly desalinated and disinfected, and a conditioner dosed for the volume of new water, not the whole tank, neutralizes the chlorine or chloramine. pH and hardness can vary between areas and with rooftop storage tanks, so test your own tap water before relying on it.

If you are buying your first aquarium test kit in the UAE, a liquid master kit is more accurate than strips and lasts for hundreds of tests. Test a new tank every few days while it cycles and an established tank weekly. Ammonia and nitrite should read zero, and nitrate is best kept low with water changes. Warm, high-pH water makes any ammonia more toxic, so test more often in summer, and move pH slowly, as a sudden swing hurts fish more than a stable value slightly off target.

For reef tanks, mix salt into RO water in a separate container with a pump and heater, let it circulate for a day and check salinity before use. Top up evaporation with fresh RO water, never saltwater.
