Running CO2 safely and keeping fish healthy
CO2 helps plants grow, but too much leaves fish short of oxygen. Start with a low bubble rate, raise it gradually over several days and watch the drop checker: blue means too little, green is the usual target and yellow signals too much. If fish hang at the surface or breathe fast, switch the gas off and increase surface movement straight away. A timer that starts CO2 about an hour before the lights and stops it before they go off keeps levels steady.

Warm water holds less oxygen, so run CO2 at the lower end in summer when tanks heat up. Store cylinders upright and out of direct sun, never in a car or on a balcony, because pressure rises with temperature. Dose fertilizer in step with light and CO2, since spare nutrients feed algae.

Fish health and wellness also rests on steady temperature, clean water, a varied diet and quarantining new arrivals in a separate tank for a few weeks. If you notice white spots, clamped fins, sores or unusual behavior, ask an aquatic vet or an experienced aquarium specialist before treating, as the right approach depends on an accurate diagnosis.
