How to choose and handle reptile food safely
Size prey to the snake. A good guide is a rodent no wider than the thickest part of the snake’s body. Thaw frozen mice for snakes in the fridge or in a sealed bag at room temperature, then warm briefly in warm water. Never microwave or refreeze them, and offer food with tongs to avoid a mistaken bite.
Frozen feeders should go into the freezer as soon as they arrive. When ordering reptile food in Dubai during summer, plan to be home for delivery, since a parcel left on a doorstep or in a car for even a short time can start to thaw.
For aquatic species, turtle food sticks make a solid staple alongside leafy greens. Feed only what the turtle eats in a few minutes, ideally in a separate tub, which keeps the main tank cleaner.
Insect-eating lizards do best on live, gut-loaded insects, with dried insects as treats rather than the whole diet. Ask your reptile vet how often to dust insects with calcium or vitamins for your species.
