API Quick Start – 16oz

API Quick Start contains live nitrifying bacteria that start the natural aquarium cycle straight away, so you can add fish without the usual long wait. The bacteria convert toxic ammonia into nitrite and then into much less harmful nitrate, which helps prevent fish losses. It is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums and is most useful when setting up a new tank, after water or filter changes and when adding fish to an existing aquarium.

Dosing and bottle size

Shake the bottle well, then add 10 ml (two teaspoons) for every 10 US gallons (38 litres); saltwater tanks need double that dose. Fish can go in straight after dosing. Use it when setting up a tank, adding new fish, changing water or replacing filter media, after a course of medication, or whenever a test shows ammonia or nitrite. Choose the size by tank volume: a 4oz bottle holds nearly a dozen doses for a 10-gallon freshwater tank, while the 16oz and 32oz bottles suit large or saltwater systems. It contains live bacteria, so store it somewhere cool and dry.

Keep testing ammonia and nitrite during the first weeks, and add fish gradually rather than all at once so the bacteria can keep pace.
