Checking and removing ticks

After walks through long grass, woodland or parks, run your hands over your pet and look closely at the ears, head, neck, armpits, belly and between the toes, where ticks often attach. Remove any you find promptly, as the risk of disease passing to your pet grows the longer a tick feeds. Use the large end for fully fed ticks and the small end for young ones, and avoid smothering ticks in alcohol, oil or petroleum jelly first, which can make them release more saliva. If your vet may want to identify the tick, keep it in a sealed container. Clean the pen with disinfectant afterwards.
