Choosing and using it

Four lengths are available: 4, 6, 8 and 12 inch, or roughly 10, 15, 20 and 30cm. The shorter bars suit nano and small tanks or a corner of a larger one, while the 8 and 12 inch bars spread bubbles across more of the back glass in medium and large aquariums. A longer stone needs more air to bubble evenly, so check that your pump is strong enough, or fit a valve to share air between stones. Soak a new airstone in water for a few minutes before use so it saturates and bubbles evenly from the start. Lay it along the back of the tank or behind plants and decorations, connect it with airline tubing and fit a non-return valve if the pump sits below the water level. Over time, mineral sand stones clog with algae and deposits, and the bubbles become larger and patchy, so plan to replace them every few months for the best aeration.
