Planning your air supply

With 60 litres of air a minute, this is a commercial-scale pump for fish rooms, breeders, shops, seafood displays and large ponds, where one unit feeds many airstones at once, rather than a single home aquarium. Plan the air network before installing: run a main line to a manifold or gang valves, then branch off to each tank, so every outlet can be adjusted separately. Fit non-return valves on each line so water cannot siphon back if the power fails. Mount the pump in a dry, well-ventilated spot above water level, where the aluminium casing can shed heat and splashes cannot reach it. Because the pump is oil-free, it needs little routine care, but keep the air intake free of dust and check the airline joints for leaks if output drops. Use a socket protected by a residual current device, and consider a battery backup air pump for livestock that cannot survive long without aeration.
