Using and caring for it

Test at the same time of day each time, because pH naturally shifts between morning and evening as plants and algae use carbon dioxide. Remove the cap, rinse the tip in clean water, then dip it into a sample of tank water and stir gently until the reading settles before noting it. Check its accuracy every few weeks against a pH buffer solution, and follow the calibration steps in the instructions if the reading has drifted. As a rough guide, most community freshwater fish do well between pH 6.5 and 7.5, while reef and marine tanks sit higher, around 8.1 to 8.4. After use, rinse the electrode, replace the cap and never let the glass tip dry out completely, as a dry electrode responds slowly and gives unreliable readings. The electrode is replaceable, so when readings stay sluggish even after cleaning, a new one brings the pen back into service. The four 1.5V batteries are included.
