Finding the right pad

Each pad is cut for one model in the classic range, and four versions are listed here: classic 150, 250, 350 and 600. Check the model on your filter head or in the manual before ordering, because a pad that is too small lets dirty water bypass it, and one that is too large will not seat properly. The classic 250 pad, for example, measures 95 x 95 x 60mm and comes as a pack of two. Coarse pads work both mechanically, catching debris, and biologically, by hosting beneficial bacteria, so they do not need replacing at every clean. Rinse them in a bucket of old tank water, never under the hot tap, and squeeze gently until most of the dirt is gone. Replace a pad once it starts to crumble, stays flattened or no longer springs back into shape. To protect the bacterial colony, avoid changing pads and other media at the same time; stagger replacements by a few weeks. Fit the new pad in the same position as the old one.
