Signs of wear and fitting

A worn shaft or bushing usually shows up as rattling or grinding, vibration, a filter that is slow to start, or a drop in flow even after cleaning. To fit the new part, unplug the filter, remove the impeller cover, pull out the impeller and the old shaft, and clean the impeller well with a small brush. Push a rubber bushing onto each end of the new shaft, slide it back through the impeller, seat it in the housing and refit the cover. Replacing worn bushings at the same time as the shaft prevents the new part from wobbling, and it is worth checking the impeller magnet for cracks while it is out.
