Bathing a long-haired cat

Brush the coat thoroughly before the bath, as water can tighten existing knots and make them harder to remove; severe mats are best clipped out first. A rubber mat in the sink or tub helps a nervous cat feel steadier, and having towels, a jug of lukewarm water and the shampoo within reach keeps the bath short.
