Where and how to comb

Mats tend to start in the same places, so after brushing, run the comb slowly through the hair behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, along the back of the legs and around the tail. If the comb stops, hold the hair at its base and tease the knot apart from the tips inwards rather than pulling. Combing right down to the skin also lets you spot fleas, ticks, grass seeds and skin changes early. Long or thick coats benefit from a weekly comb-through, more often during moulting, while tight mats close to the skin are best left to a groomer.

Good to know

Brush first, then comb through the coat in the direction of growth, working gently around mats. Clean hair from the comb after use.
