Building a brushing routine

Start with the finger massager, which feels less strange to a dog or cat than a brush: rub it gently along the gums for a few seconds, praise, and stop before your pet gets restless. Once that is accepted, move on to the toothbrush, holding it at an angle towards the gumline and working in small circles over the outer surfaces of the teeth, where plaque builds up most. A pet dental gel or toothpaste on the brush makes the experience tastier and improves the result; never use human toothpaste. Aim for a few minutes every day at the same calm time.
