When and how to replace it

The ring is squeezed each time the cylinder is changed or refilled, so many keepers fit a fresh one at every cylinder swap; with a set of two you have one to fit now and a spare for next time. To replace it, close the cylinder valve and unscrew the pressure reducer, lift the old ring out with a blunt plastic tool rather than anything sharp, wipe the seat clean and press the new ring in evenly before hand-tightening the reducer again. Keep the spare in its bag, away from heat and sunlight, so the rubber does not harden.

Good to know

Check for leaks after fitting by brushing a little soapy water over the connection and looking for bubbles.
