Red volcanic stone is a porous, natural lava rock ideal for aquariums and filtration, helping improve water quality while adding a natural, rugged look.

Ways to use it

The stone has two main uses. As hardscape, its rough red surface makes a striking contrast with green plants, and mosses, anubias and java fern attach easily to its porous texture with cotton thread or plant glue. As filter media, small pieces placed in a canister, sump or pond filter give beneficial bacteria a large surface to colonise. Before use, rinse it thoroughly and soak it, scrubbing away dust and loose grit, as new lava rock can cloud the water. Its edges can be rough, so position it away from areas where delicate bottom dwellers or long-finned fish rest. Build rockwork on the tank base before adding substrate so it cannot shift, and check that larger pieces are stable. If you use it as filter media, rinse it in old tank water rather than tap water during maintenance, so the bacteria survive. Each 10kg bag contains naturally varied pieces.
