Komodo Habitat Moss is a natural sphagnum moss that holds moisture well, making it ideal for keeping humidity up in reptile and amphibian set-ups. It works well as a substrate, and the right level of moisture helps reptiles shed their skin cleanly. It suits species such as crested geckos, day geckos, water dragons, royal pythons, poison dart frogs, White’s tree frogs and hermit crabs.

Making a humid hide

Besides use as a substrate, the moss is ideal for a humid hide: fill a small box or cave with damp moss and place it on the warm side, giving species such as royal pythons and geckos a moist retreat when they are about to shed. A 1.5 L bag is a convenient amount for hides, a few patches across a planted terrarium or lining an egg-laying box. Squeeze it until damp rather than dripping, and swap out soiled moss promptly to prevent mould.

Good to know

Soak the moss in clean water, squeeze out the excess and spread it where needed. Mist it to keep it damp and replace it when it starts to break down or smells stale.
