Using it with livebearers

The box is most often used for livebearers such as guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails. Move the female in only when she is close to giving birth, shown by a squared-off belly and a dark gravid spot, because a long stay in a small space can stress her. Once the fry have dropped through the gap, return the mother to the main tank and leave the young in the lower compartment until they are too big to be eaten, usually a few weeks. This version has no pump, so place it where the filter flow passes over it to keep the water inside fresh, and remove uneaten food daily. The same box works as a temporary hospital or holding pen for a weak fish, or as a place for a new arrival to settle before joining the others.
