Choosing a size and netting fish

Seven sizes are available, from 3 to 12 inches. The 3 and 4 inch nets suit nano tanks, fry and shrimp, the 5 and 6 inch nets suit most community fish, and the 8, 10 and 12 inch nets are for larger fish and bigger aquariums. Choose a net that fits easily through the tank opening and between decorations. Netting is calmer with two nets: hold one still and gently guide the fish into it with the other, rather than chasing it around the tank. Dimming the lights first also helps. Keep the fish underwater in the net until the last moment and transfer it quickly. Fish with sharp spines, such as many catfish, can tangle in mesh, so move them in a container instead. Rinse the net after use and let it dry, and keep separate nets for each tank to avoid spreading disease.
