Maxspect Nano-Tech Anaerobic Blocks 2 pcs

Maxspect Nano-Tech Anaerobic Blocks 2 pcs are porous filter blocks that lower nitrate in marine and freshwater aquariums. Inside, nano-ceramic beads treated with Maxspect’s own process give oxygen-poor zones where anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria, such as Paracoccus denitrificans and various pseudomonads, can settle. These bacteria complete the nitrogen cycle by turning nitrate into nitrogen gas, which leaves the water, so nutrients are exported naturally. A pair of blocks is rated for systems of up to 1,000 litres.

Setting up the blocks

Each block measures 97 x 97 x 25mm. Maxspect’s instructions are to use them directly in the sump, stacked flat on top of each other, with a Denitrification Catalyst placed between the two blocks; the catalyst is used up slowly and should be replaced about every two months. Clean or replace the blocks around every six months, but only half at a time, so enough bacteria remain to recolonise the fresh block. Bacterial colonies take time to establish, so test nitrate regularly to follow progress rather than expecting an instant drop.

Good to know

Denitrifying bacteria take weeks to establish, so avoid cleaning the blocks with tap water and keep testing nitrate while the colony builds.
