The Maxspect Rsx R5F-200 Freshwater is a slim LED fixture for freshwater aquariums, housed in a light, architectural-grade aluminium frame shaped for passive cooling without fans. An on-board controller with LED display makes setting it up straightforward, and you can also control it wirelessly. Four programmable full-spectrum colour channels let you build a daily cycle that moves from dawn through to dusk. It uses Cree XLamp XT-E and XP-E LED chips and comes with legs for mounting on the tank rim.

Who it suits and setting up

With a 195W rating and a recommended tank length of 85 to 120cm, this fixture is aimed at larger planted and freshwater display tanks. It sits on the supplied tank-top legs, and the aluminium body cools passively, so leave space above it for air to move. The four colour channels are set on the built-in controller or from an iOS or Android device, and up to 32 RSX units can be linked for very long tanks. On a new setup, start with lower intensity and a shorter photoperiod, then raise both gradually as plants establish.
