Choosing blades for the job
A5-style blades are numbered by cutting length, and the higher the number, the shorter the cut: a #10 leaves about 1.5mm and is the usual choice for paw pads, sanitary areas and tidying, a #40 gives a very close, surgical-style finish, and low numbers such as #4F or #5F leave the coat noticeably longer. Blades marked F (full tooth) leave a smoother finish than skip-tooth blades, which are faster on thick coats but need more care near the skin. For longer styles, clip-on comb attachments fit over a #10, #30 or #40 blade. Work with the lay of the coat and check blade temperature often with the back of your hand.
