Before you start treatment

Confirm the problem first: white spot shows as small, salt-like grains on the body and fins, often with fish scratching against decor. Because sharks, rays and invertebrates such as shrimp, snails and corals do not tolerate the treatment, move them to a separate tank before dosing, or treat the fish in a hospital tank instead. Take activated carbon out of the filter and switch off any UV clarifier while treating, as both remove the active ingredient, but keep the filter running and aeration strong. Darken the tank as directed, dose exactly as the pack directions state, and finish the full course even if the spots disappear early. If fish do not improve, ask a vet or an experienced aquatic specialist for advice.
