Who it suits and dosing

A stable pH around 8.3 suits fish from hard, alkaline water, such as Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids and many livebearers, but it is not right for soft-water species like tetras, discus or most rasboras. Test pH and carbonate hardness before you start so you know how far you need to go. Dissolve the measured dose in a jug of tank water rather than tipping powder straight in, then add it slowly near the filter outflow. Raise pH gradually over several days rather than in one step, as sudden swings stress fish. Treat new water at each water change too, so the tank does not drop back between tests. Remember that natural acids from fish waste and decaying food gradually use up the buffer, which is why regular testing matters. Keep the tub tightly closed and dry.
