Placing and planting the wood

Thin, light branches like these tend to float at first, so weigh them down under a stone while soaking. In the tank, push the base well into the substrate or tie it to a flat rock with fishing line so it stays in place. Grouping several pieces so they lean the same way gives a natural, tree-like scene. Tie moss on with cotton thread, which rots away once the moss has gripped, and trim any branch that is too long with secateurs before planting around it.

Good to know

Soak new wood before use until it sinks, and expect some tannins to tint the water at first; regular partial water changes and activated carbon will clear it.
