What to check before buying

Before ordering, check that the regulator’s connection matches the valve on your CO2 cylinder, as cylinder threads differ between countries and suppliers. The regulator controls pressure, but a complete set-up also needs CO2-resistant tubing, a bubble counter to see the flow and a diffuser or reactor to dissolve the gas, so work out which of these you already own. After fitting, brush soapy water over each joint and look for bubbles before leaving the system running. Start with a low flow and raise it slowly over several days while watching your fish, and use a drop checker in the tank to fine-tune the level.

Fit a check valve in the CO2 line and connect the solenoid to a timer so CO2 switches off at night.
