Dosing and how long it lasts
API’s dose is 1 ml per 2 US gallons, or 1 teaspoon per 10 US gallons, which works out at about 1 ml for every 7.5 litres. Add it weekly or whenever you change water, and double the dose for very dirty tanks. As a guide, a 40 gallon (about 150 litre) turtle tank needs around 20 ml a week, so the 4 oz bottle lasts roughly six weeks and the 8 oz bottle about three months. Turtles produce far more waste than fish of the same size, so the bacteria work best alongside a filter rated well above the tank volume, regular partial water changes and feeding in a separate container where possible.
Good to know
Add weekly and after water changes, keep up regular filter maintenance, and avoid using it alongside antibacterial treatments.
