Activated carbon is an essential filter media for every aquarium.It can effectively eliminate odors, detoxifies farmful metals, purifies and soften the water.

Using carbon effectively

Rinse the granules in old tank water or dechlorinated water until it runs clear, to wash away the fine dust. Then put them in a mesh media bag and place it after the sponges or floss in your filter, so the carbon receives clean water and does not clog with dirt. Carbon works by holding impurities on its surface, and once that surface is full it stops working, so replace it regularly, typically every few weeks, rather than leaving it in for months. Carbon is especially useful after a course of medication, to remove leftover treatment, and for clearing the yellow tint that bogwood can give to water. Take it out while you are medicating the tank, as it will remove the treatment too. Rinsing used carbon does not restore it, so throw it away when you change it. Keep the unused carbon in its sealed bag, as it can absorb smells and moisture from the air.
