Playing safely with your cat
A wand toy suits kittens learning to stalk and pounce, indoor cats that need more exercise, and older cats that enjoy gentle play. Move the feathers the way prey would: drag them slowly along the floor, flick them behind a chair, then pause so your cat can creep up and leap. Let your cat catch the toy now and then, because chasing without ever winning can be frustrating. Two or three short sessions of 10 to 15 minutes a day are plenty for most cats, and ending each one with a final catch helps them settle afterwards. Always put the wand away out of reach when play is over, as cats can chew or swallow feathers and cord when left alone with them. Check the pendants and joints before each session, and replace the toy as soon as feathers start to come loose or the cord wears thin.
