Taking an accurate reading
To take a reading, lift the daylight plate, place two or three drops of tank water on the prism and close the plate so the sample spreads evenly without bubbles. Point the front end towards a light source and read the scale through the eyepiece where the blue and white areas meet. Most reef keepers aim for a specific gravity of about 1.025-1.026, around 35ppt, while fish-only systems are often kept a little lower. RO water confirms the zero point, but a 35ppt calibration fluid checks accuracy right in the range you actually use, which is why many marine keepers prefer it. Let the sample reach room temperature before reading, and rinse the prism with fresh water afterwards.
Good to know
Calibrate it regularly with calibration fluid or RO water, and wipe the prism clean after each use.
