Exo Terra Bio Drain Substrate 4.4lb is a natural, non-organic drainage material for the base of planted and bioactive terrariums. Because it is inorganic, it does not rot or break down the way natural substrates can, so it keeps draining well over time. Excess water collects in this bottom layer instead of soaking the soil, and the layer also works as a biological filter, keeping the water clean enough to be recirculated through a waterfall, a Rain System or Exo Terra Dripping Plants. Adding Exo Terra Bio Clean helps the filtration get established faster.

Layering your terrarium

Lay BioDrain as the bottom layer, deep enough that any collected water stays below the soil above it, then add the optional BioDrain mesh and your top substrate, so the layers stay separate. In a bioactive set-up, leaf litter and springtails or isopods on top complete the system. Where your terrarium has a drain or water feature, the clean water collected in this layer can be drained off or recirculated. Rinse it before use to remove any dust.

Good to know

The optional BioDrain Mesh stops the top substrate from mixing with this layer and keeps the collected water cleaner.
