When and how to apply it

The best time to use it is during a routine filter service, when the motor head is already off and the seals are exposed. Look closely at each seal ring before greasing it: a ring that is cracked, flattened or stretched will still leak, so replace it rather than relying on lubricant. Work the silicone around the ring with a fingertip, then refit the ring so it sits flat and evenly in its groove before closing the filter. Avoid petroleum jelly and household greases, which can make rubber swell or perish and are not meant for use in water with fish.

Apply a thin, even coat to clean seals only, and wipe away any excess before reassembling.
