Golden Aquarium Gravel 3-5mm, 8kg

Golden Aquarium Gravel is a decorative aquarium substrate made of a warm golden gravel, supplied in an 8kg bag. It forms a natural-looking tank floor for freshwater aquariums, adds colour to the layout and gives beneficial bacteria plenty of surface to colonise.

Working out how much you need

To estimate quantity, multiply the length and width of your tank by the gravel depth you want, all in centimetres, and divide by 1,000 to get litres. Aquarium gravel weighs roughly 1.5kg per litre, so this 8kg bag fills a little over 5 litres, enough for about a 3cm layer in a 60 x 30cm tank; deeper beds or larger tanks will need more bags. The 3-5mm grain is fine enough for plant roots to anchor and for bottom-dwelling fish to forage. Run a gravel vacuum over it during water changes so waste does not build up between the stones.

Good to know

Rinse the gravel thoroughly until the water runs clear, and spread it in an even layer about 5cm deep, sloping slightly higher towards the back.
