Choosing a size

The rocks are sold by weight, so each piece is unique: M weighs 1 to 2kg, L 2 to 3.5kg and XL over 3.5kg. In a tank of around 60cm, one or two M pieces are usually enough, while L and XL rocks suit larger aquariums or a single bold centrepiece. The holes and hollows make them popular with cichlids, catfish and other fish that like to claim a cave. Stack rocks only where they sit firmly on the glass or on each other, as heavy stone can crack the base if it falls, and leave a gap behind them for siphoning.

Good to know

Rinse the rock before use, and place it on the base glass before adding substrate so it cannot shift.
