Handling with a hook
The hook is designed for colubrids such as corn snakes, king snakes and milk snakes, and other light species; heavy-bodied pythons and boas need a sturdier hook or two-handed support. Slide the hook under the snake around mid-body and lift slowly, keeping the body supported, rather than hooking it near the head or tail. Many keepers also touch a snake gently with the hook before handling, so it learns the difference between being handled and being fed. Extended to 60 cm, it helps with nervous or defensive animals; collapsed to 21 cm, it fits in a drawer. Clean it after use with a reptile-safe disinfectant.

Support the snake’s body gently, and do not use the hook for heavy snakes it is not designed for.
