Which species it suits
Hobby names blue-tongued skinks (Tiliqua), Horsfield’s tortoises (Agrionemys) and horned lizards (Phrynosoma) as examples, which shows where it fits best: dry, warm terrariums for species from arid or semi-arid habitats. It is less suited to rainforest or high-humidity set-ups, where a substrate that holds moisture is the better choice. Spread a layer deep enough for natural behaviour, a few centimetres for most lizards and deeper areas for species that like to dig. Offering insects or greens from a dish rather than directly on the substrate keeps the amount swallowed to a minimum. Place the water bowl where splashes will not soak large areas, and lift out any wet patches promptly.
Good to know
Spot-clean droppings daily, provide a shallow water dish and a heat gradient, and replace the substrate fully every few months.
