Placing and running the lamp

UV-B does not pass through glass or most plastics, so mount the lamp where it shines into the terrarium directly or through a mesh lid, never behind a glass cover. Position it at one end, near the basking area, so your reptile can move in and out of the UV zone as it would in the wild. A compact lamp suits small and medium terrariums; very tall or long enclosures may need a tube or more powerful fitting to reach the floor. Run it for the same hours as your daytime lights on a timer, typically 10 to 12 hours, and note the fitting date so you know when it is due for replacement.

Choose Desert for arid species and Jungle for tropical species, and replace the lamp regularly as UV output declines.
