Hobby Zeolith

Hobby Zeolith is a porous natural stone filter medium that binds pollutants and gives beneficial bacteria a place to settle. As an ion exchanger, it helps adsorb toxins such as ammonium from aquarium water.

How much to use

As a guide from Hobby, 1kg of Zeolith lasts about three months in a 500 litre aquarium with an average number of fish, so smaller tanks need proportionally less. Hobby makes it in 500g and 1kg packs with a 5 to 8mm grain, and in a 10kg pack with a coarser 8 to 16mm grain for large systems. Put the stones in a Hobby Net Filter Bag so they are easy to lift out and change. Besides binding ammonium, the fine pores store excess nutrients and decay products, which helps to lower phosphate and keep the water clear. Note the date when you add a fresh batch, so you know when it is due for a change.

Good to know

Rinse before use, place it after mechanical media in the filter, and replace or regenerate it regularly as it becomes saturated.
