JBL Micromec 700g

JBL Micromec is a biological filter medium made of sintered glass balls for freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Beneficial microorganisms settle in its conical tunnel pores, which offer around 1,500 m² of surface per litre, and break down ammonium and nitrite before they can build up in the water. This keeps the water clean and clear through biological filtration. The balls are designed for the second-last stage of the filter, after the mechanical media and before any final fine wool. This pack contains 700g.

Getting the most from the media

JBL quotes a settling area of 1,500m² per litre for these sintered glass balls, which gives bacteria plenty of room to break down ammonium and nitrite. Place them after the mechanical stage, so sponges catch dirt before it reaches and clogs the pores. New media takes several weeks to build a full bacterial population, so when adding it to a running filter, keep the old media in place at first. When cleaning, swish the balls gently in tank water only, and if you ever replace them, change no more than half at a time so the filter keeps working.

Good to know

Fill the balls into a filter basket or net bag so they stay together and can be lifted out easily during maintenance.
