JBL ProClean Aqua Ex 20-45 is a gravel cleaner for siphoning waste out of the substrate in aquariums with a water height of 20 to 45 cm. A built-in suction valve starts the flow when you shake the tube, so the water runs into a bucket without you having to suck on the hose. A corner moulded into the round cleaning tube creates a strong swirling effect, loosening dirt and lifting it out even from the tank corners. A removable protective sieve stops plants, shrimp and fish from being drawn in, and a stopcock lets you stop the flow when you are done.

Choosing and using it

This model is the one for tanks between 20 and 45 cm high; for deeper aquariums JBL makes a longer Aqua Ex version, so measure your water depth first. Stand the bucket well below the tank so gravity keeps the flow going, then work across the bottom in sections, pushing the bell into the gravel and lifting it so debris is drawn up while the heavier grains fall back. On fine sand, hold the bell just above the surface rather than digging it in.

Good to know

Take the protective sieve off now and then and rinse it so the flow stays strong. Close the stopcock before lifting the cleaner out of the water to avoid drips.
