JBL Sansibar Dark 5kg

JBL Sansibar Dark is a fine, dark granite sand for freshwater and marine aquariums and terrariums. Its 0.2 to 0.6 mm grains give plant roots a firm hold, and because the sand packs densely, sludge and other waste stay on top instead of working their way in, which supports healthy plant growth. The fine grains are gentle on the sensitive barbels of bottom-dwelling fish. A dark floor also cuts down light reflections, so timid fish tend to feel more at ease and show their full natural colours, and plants stand out well against it.

How much you need

JBL’s rule of thumb is length times width in centimetres divided by 140, which gives the kilograms needed for a 5cm-deep layer. On that basis one 5kg bag covers about 700cm² at 5cm deep, for example a 35 x 20cm nano tank, or roughly a 60 x 30cm tank at around 2cm deep. Planted tanks usually need the deeper layer, so larger aquariums will need several bags or the 10kg size. Rinse the sand in a bucket until the water runs almost clear before adding it.

Good to know

Pour water in slowly over a plate or bag when filling so the fine sand is not stirred up, and stir the top layer lightly during water changes.
