JBL Sansibar Grey 5kg

JBL Sansibar Grey is a fine natural sand in an undyed grey tone for freshwater and saltwater aquariums as well as aqua-terrariums. Its fine, dense grain keeps sludge and other waste on the surface rather than letting it seep into the bed, which helps plants grow well. The grains are rounded, so they will not injure the delicate barbels and mucous membranes of fish that root through the bottom, such as armoured catfish and loaches. The sand releases no unwanted pollutants, making it a safe choice for fish, invertebrates and plants.

Grain size and quantities

The grains measure 0.2 to 0.6mm, fine and rounded enough for catfish and loaches to sift without damaging their barbels. As a rough guide, sand weighs about 1.5kg per litre, so this 5kg bag gives a little over 3 litres, enough to cover a 60 x 30cm tank to a depth of about 2cm; for deeper beds or bigger tanks, JBL also offers a 10kg bag. Rinse the sand in a bucket until the water runs clearer before adding it. JBL notes it is not fully suitable for use over undergravel heating cables. Stir the surface lightly during water changes so no stagnant pockets form.

Good to know

Fill water in slowly over a plate or plastic bag so the fine grains stay in place and the tank clears quickly.
