Using a coarse comb well

A coarse comb is the best way to check that brushing has actually reached the skin: after brushing, run it through the coat from the roots outwards, and wherever it catches, there is a tangle the brush missed. Work in small sections, starting at the tips of the hair and working gradually towards the skin, especially behind the ears, in the armpits and on the trousers, where knots form most often. For a stubborn knot, hold the hair firmly at the base so the comb does not tug the skin. Mats that are tight against the skin are best clipped out by a groomer rather than combed.
